You are explaining what happened to an in law but I’ve never heard it described from the “inside”…

…but could do so from the safety of my home. I hated going to the shops or anywhere busy or crowded. I even found it difficult to spend time with friends and family as I would become so fearful that something terrifying would happen whilst I was away from home.
