With you on this...I've had some heart-to-heart moments with myself with some I've followed, and I'll pick one thing in the article that I find positive. If the writing is just atrocious - no, won't follow and clap - but it's just my opinion, so I don't feel in the position to let them know.

But agree with you: claps, commenting, and giving false adoration are wrong.

In fact - I sometimes worry I receive those, and to be perfectly honest -- I don't want it at all. I want genuine likes and comments. Otherwise, what's the point?
