Writing on Medium
What I Wish I Knew About Medium When I First Started — and No One Told Me
Below are lessons I learned about Medium as I began my journey as a writer over the last six months. Let this be one more experience you read about to give you an idea of what it can look like. Your path will be different — hopefully the notion — the more you know the better you’ll do — will be true for you!
- Be mindful when reading advice to “new writers” on Medium. Ask questions — and apply the parts that make sense to you. I read the advice to “find my niche” innumerable times. Then I read from those enjoying success in Medium that they don’t have one. Go figure!
- I was often told as a new writer to publish daily. It stressed me out! So, I didn’t — I learned forced writing doesn’t have the same “punch” as writing born from a topic or story that I want to write about. If you enjoy publishing daily on Medium — all power to you! For those who don’t, here’s a word of encouragement. By allowing your story to breathe and live a little, you give your followers a chance to read it! As a writer, we can enjoy a moment to reciprocate and build connections. Know yourself and understand which writing schedule fits you best.
