The Writing Game of Mind Against Soul and Aiming for That Sweet Spot

Years ago my Dad told me, “Golf is a game you play against yourself.”
I may have been in my teens when I first heard him say it, and it certainly wasn’t the last. He was an avid player — okay, truth be told — Dad was addicted to golf.
He played every chance he could get. In the words of my beloved mother, he even planned our vacations around some of the most beautiful golf courses he dreamed to play on.
But this story isn’t about those vacations, nor Dad or golf — it’s about writing.
I remembered his golf saying this morning and reflected, “Writing is a game I’m playing against myself.” I find myself as addicted to writing as I sense Dad was to golf. I think about it — even when I am not doing it.
