Sometimes I left a painted stone encouraging neighbors to vote — but it was often the conversations that left a mark on my heart that kept me pounding the pavement / Author’s image

10 pm CST USA, November 4th, 2024

An hour ago, I hung up on a call of my last phone banking session for this campaign season. I joined five organizations two months ago and assisted in calling four states for multiple races volunteering over 20 hours. I can unequivocally say, “I gave it my all.”

Democracy demanded that I do my part. I raised my hand and gave what I could. My job granted me little flexibility, but I needed to find a way to volunteer.

I want my children and descendants to know what I stand for and to encourage them to participate and help the greater cause when history requires them to get uncomfortable, correction — highly uncomfortable.

The discomfort is but a small sacrifice when we understand what is at stake. I cannot let the night end without sharing the heart of a few of the many unforgettable conversations I shared with people I spoke to over the past few weeks.
