Just keep in mind, let's say the green line highlights 15 notifications - once you click on the first one, and return, the green line is gone.

So, here's what I do:

When you begin to address your responses, pick the name you started with embedded in your notifications (assuming you're starting with earliest and moving to latest):

Keep that person as a reference for when you return back to the list and click one by one until you get to the top.

What's happening also is the following:

Say I, Jenny and Susan comment on this story relatively close to each other you'll get:

"Jenny +3 others clapped or commented...."

What that means is that you are thinking only Jenny commented and you go looking for hers -- but what I would suggested doing is: right while you are in the comments, see who else did...and respond to each at that moment. (That's how I learned that I was missing comments).
