What powerful lines -- teaching me, us, that the drug of choice can be so attached to the feelings of longing and belonging and that their power and survival are hinged on set and setting: I just think this is word mastery and so succinct!

You would be SUCH an amazing therapist and help to those who battle substance abuse, maybe you do this already. But you understand it deeply....thanks for sharing with us so that if we are one day in a position to empathize or help someone with a struggle, we can arrive from a place of empathy and not judgment.
