While we all make mistakes, the ones we make as a parent are often harder to accept when you see the implications begin to take shape in your children’s lives.

I learned one of the biggest mistakes I made as a mother sometime in 2011. Oh, there are others — for sure!! But this is the story of how I learned of one I made in my youngest son’s (Nathan) young life.

Sixth Grade

Nathan finished elementary school having met most of his IEP (Individualized Education Plan) goals. He had been diagnosed with ADHD three years prior. He was making adequate progress with great academic support.

He was the “lucky one” of my three sons who always met the “changes” of the school district.

Typically 6th grade is either a part of the elementary or middle schools in the United States. Not in our district! They decided that 6th grade should be an entity of its own. By sixth grade, Nathan had been to five different schools. What a trooper he’s been!
