I have fundamentally rejected the theory that because we read and comment: we are the problem.
I don’t think writers have a concept of what massive organized read-for read can look like with huge numbers and use of bots.
We have to remember: we do not have access to the data they see and can track. Most are automated. Clearly they are making mistakes, because legitimate writers have been swept up by the “automatic” findings.
They have reported these numbers and they are in the thousands: it cannot be manually addressed. Yes, medium is not as clear and forthcoming with what is occurring, but I’m sympathetic to the fact that this is relatively new to platforms and occurring at alarming numbers. Do I believe for one moment that I would have done a better job? Absolutely not…
I suppose I’m saying: I wish there was greater patience and sympathy by those who have benefitted from a platform that has been for the most part—a healthy and fantastic one that brought us together and allows us to share the written word—freely.
They rewarded engagement when they changed the rules—it was no longer read and run off. They value our interactions. I do not see the opposite of this notion nor do I see that communicated by Medium.
But hey—to each their own.
I hope ultimately that Medium survives this deep dip as it has in the past. This exodus and unhappiness with the platform is just not new. Sadly.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us Yana—I’m glad you’re still writing here.
