I am saddened by the great exodus, but I suppose each must take care of their own. I don’t mind meeting new people but there’s a disappointment that it is this quiet. I suppose I’m surprised how many did write for the money. While earnings motivated me—I learned the last time—Medium warned everyone: dont count on this as income. But even so, it’s quite clear that given the time it takes to interact and write, it’s a very poor hourly rate unless you’re churning out two boosted articles a week—
I don’t know that it’s even sustainable to see those results here?
I see this as another recalibration. I don’t think medium is losing money—I think it suffered a great loss due to fraudulent account and they have to make sure that once they are back to paying it doesn’t happen again.
This is not an easy fix. I not only feel such gratitude for the safe healthy platform this has always been—but you the writers are the most amazing human beings ever! There’s so much to learn and grow from.
I cannot give up on a business because it has problems. It never promised me nor signed a contract with me nor ever disclosed exactly how I got paid—so I don’t see it as deception. I also don’t feel as a consumer of this platform that I am owed an explanation.
I feel they have provided one—as best they could. And I’ve read from many writers who have left for greener pastures that they feel disrespected.
Here’s my projection:
Things will turn around. As payments resume or increase, writers will return and some won’t—but life will continue.
And an entire new dynamic will be created.
If they indeed stop paying for engagement—the culture that existed where we got to know one another will die off.
That’s why I don’t agree that just paying for read time works. I don’t think that ever stopped—but there was a factored payment for clapping/commenting and highlighting and well—I enjoyed giving and receiving those.
It is part of this social media site. And it only works for a certain writer.
Well I guess with everything else in the country—it’s a wait and let’s see what happens.
Glad you’re staying Sally—have loved reading your stories and like you—I’m sticking around.
Keep well!!
