I agree with what you said about not getting sucked into someone else's process...so let me preface by saying what I would like to share is only my process:
Writing when you don't feel like it makes writing a chore, and while I see your point in that it's an "exercise to be practiced" ---I believe the heart of what you write comes through your writing when you really want to. So deciding what to publish matters when you take a look at what you wrote because you felt you had to versus what you wrote because you wanted to.
Hopefully over time -- both cases will be clearer to you--and you'll trust and have a process that works for you.
