Thanks for asking—
What we are doing is using the feature where “technically” editors send notes but use it to send private messages.
Here’s how:
1. Open an article
2. Highlight any line below the title
3. You then have the option to change the format (capital T, little T, the quotes…but look to the right: looks like a bubbled comment icon)
4. Click on that
5. Voila you are now sending a private message to author that only author can read
