From “Just Reading” to Reading for Writing

My journey to understanding how reading breathes into writing

I can hardly recognize myself these days. Well, to be honest, it’s been about ten years. I want to write. And it’s more than that — I want to be a good writer.

I think about writing all the time. I’ve planned and prepared for months here in Medium. I have my list of topics that I want to write about. And here I am not even writing about any one of those topics. I’m going to listen to many mentors who have shared here and— just write.

I taught college math for over 15 years. I always began my classes at the start of the semester with my “First Day of Class” powerpoint— my crafted method of trying to break the ice with my students and they, with one another.

I began my introduction with my personal biographical information as most of us do. This was then followed, for more times than I care to admit — with reasons why I loved math. While there are better reasons why I do love the field of math, I did candidly admit and throw in mid-sentence to my young learners sitting before me, “…and hey — what greater field to study that requires no reading and no writing?!!!!”
