Beautifully and wonderfully expressed Rebecca—
Agreed!!….as a child growing up in Venezuela, I sensed—we were all different shades of brown—some lighter/others darker—and it was perhaps my personal experience, but my childlike interpretation was: no two of us are identical so there were no “boxes” to put us in.
It all changed (I was introduced to boxes) when I arrived to the US….it slowly entered my psyche hearing the terminology white/black/Latino/Asian…
The more we seek out the characterization —the more my mind sought to find those categories.
It’s a double edged sword. Yes we can celebrate and look at those differences bc they are indeed beautiful and learn from each other —but we inevitably now point our attention to the boundaries as well.
It’s complex—but it’s worth fighting for a world united by our differences—rather than be divided by such.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment and personal perspective. Have a lovely weekend!!
