As for the friend - aww, dear Ellen - sorry to hear he's going through that. I don't have the magic potion either, but I will say this:

every time you touch base with him - he knows. As long as you're doing what you know you need/want to do out of love for him - it lets your heart know: you did all you could, so keep doing it. He's worth it - your relationship is worth it.
