Ugh, Annie - lots of emotions I imagined were stirred writing this. I have to say, I watched many films growing up in the 80s that depicted these schools and I think as I read this, it made me realize - I imagined they were therefore exaggerations of reality.
It truly clicked as I read this - those movies in the 70s and 80s were exposing these harsh realities...

I'm glad times have changed. In many ways, we have swung the pendulum in the opposite direction.
Children often times have zero respect for their elders and teachers - and teachers are now powerless to systems that see them as pawns or servants to parents and society.
