A Conversation that Opened My Son’s Eyes to See the World Through Mine
“Mom, Mr. John, asked me on International Woman’s Day whether my mother had an impact on my father’s career…and after thinking about it, I told him, ‘I don’t know.’”
My son often will reflect upon an earlier moment he experienced in the quiet of his room. Suddenly at a random moment, he’ll burst out of his room to talk and iron out the wrinkles in his thought process.
“I realize that there’s a lot of Dad’s career I am unaware of so I wasn’t sure how I should have answered Mr. John’s question.”
“Well, Nathan, the truth is — Dad is the only one who can accurately answer your question. If I attempt to answer, it’s possible my ego can inflate who I was to help me feel important. On the other hand, I can play the humble card and say, ‘No, I had nothing to do with it — he did it all on his own.’
“So, I’ll share the history with you. Later, ask Dad his opinion. Listen to his answer and compare it to mine; this should give you insight into both of us and our marriage.”
